Lysine is an amino acid that the body cannot produce itself and therefore must be obtained from food. Lysine is important for building proteins and plays a role in the structure of connective tissues such as collagen. This protein-building function can be beneficial in wound healing as well as muscle recovery. Many viruses depend on another amino acid, arginine, to replicate. Lysine effectively inhibits arginine and therefore impairs the growth of these viruses. Lysine is also associated with managing stress, anxiety, and pain, although there is currently insufficient evidence to support these claims.

 

Lysine improves the absorption of calcium.
