Calcium: carbonate versus citrate

Reserach by the ASPEN (American Society for Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition) shows that calcium carbonate is well absorbed when taken with food. (ASPEN = a US-based professional organization. Its members include dieticians, nurses, pharmacists, physicians and scientists who are involved in providing clinical nutrition to patients.)

For all bariatric patients (wether with a (mini) Gastric Bypass or a sleeve), we always advise to take ALL the vitamin- and mineral-supplements during meals. That is the best way to avoid gastric and intestinal distress. Furthermore, this helps with the absorption of calcium, when it is taken with food. (wether it is carbonater or citrate)
